Cybersecurity protects systems, networks and data from digital attacks and unauthorized access. Its main
objective is to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities before cybercriminals can exploit them.
First, get an undergraduate degree in a computer-related field.
For those still pursuing an undergraduate degree or those who have finished their
graduation, enrolling in additional courses such as Cryptography, Computer
Networks, Software and Hardware Security and Networks, Computer Security,
Programming in C, Software as a Service (SaaS) and Software Engineering
would be an added advantage.
If you have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, consider Masters degree
programs in a related field.
Get a cybersecurity certificate starting from the beginner level and proceed to
medium and advanced levels.
Above all, it is important to learn things practically, and while choosing an institution, choose one that will
give you maximum opportunities to learn and practice your skills. Private and government cyber security
initiatives, such as internships, seminars, and conferences, provide valuable practical learning experiences
in cyber security.

What is your basic education? Do you need to study Engineering / Computer Science to pursue this field?
I have a Ph.D. in Computer Science and engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU),
along with an M.Tech and B.E. in Computer Science and engineering. While a formal degree in Computer
Science or Engineering is highly beneficial for a career in this field, it is not the only route. Professionals from
mathematics, statistics, and even nontechnical backgrounds can transition into cyber security and AI fields
by acquiring the necessary programming, networking, and security knowledge through certifications,
courses, and hands-on practice.

What are the most common security threats that everyone should know?
Cybersecurity threats are increasingly sophisticated, and everyone should know the most common risks.
Phishing attacks remain one of the biggest threats. These attacks involve fraudulent emails or messages
that trick users into revealing sensitive information like passwords or financial details.
Ransomware is another major concern, where malicious software encrypts files and demands a ransom
for their release.
Social engineering manipulates individuals into divulging confidential data, often by posing as trusted
entities.
Identity theft is a growing issue, where attackers gain unauthorized access to personal data to commit
financial fraud. Weak passwords make accounts vulnerable to hacking, as attackers can easily guess or
crack them.
Additionally, using public Wi-Fi without proper security measures can expose personal information to
hackers who intercept data on unsecured networks. Being cautious and adopting strong cybersecurity
practices can help mitigate these risks.
How does your normal day look like?
My day is a dynamic blend of teaching, research and administrative responsibilities. I start with conducting
lectures and mentoring students, ensuring they gain a strong foundation in cybersecurity, AI and machine
learning. A significant part of my time is dedicated to researching innovations in these fields and working
on projects that contribute to the academic and industry landscape. As the Faculty Sponsor for the MITB
ACM Student Chapter, I guide students in organizing technical events, workshops, and hackathons,
helping them stay engaged with the latest trends in computing. Additionally, I actively participate in the
ACM India Eminent Speaker Program, where I deliver talks at various institutions, sharing insights on
cybersecurity and AI. My schedule also includes writing research papers and grant proposals, collaborating
with both academia and industry and attending or speaking at conferences and workshops. Furthermore, I
contribute to curriculum development and supervise student projects, ensuring they are aligned with
industry needs and emerging technologies.

I dont have clients; rather, I have collaborators across various sectors. I work closely with educational
institutions, helping develop cybersecurity curricula and guiding research initiatives. My collaboration
extends to government organizations, particularly in research projects involving AI and IoT for social
impact, such as sustainable agriculture and healthcare solutions. In the corporate sector, I engage with
industry experts on cybersecurity solutions and AI-driven applications. Additionally, I support startups
and entrepreneurs, assisting them in building secure digital platforms. Through these partnerships, I aim to
bridge the gap between research, education, and real-world applications in cybersecurity and AI.
What are the pros and cons of being in this career?
A career in cybersecurity and academia comes with numerous advantages. One of the biggest pros is the
high demand for cybersecurity professionals, as every industry relies on secure digital systems. This field
also offers continuous innovation and research opportunities, allowing professionals to stay at the
forefront of AI, machine learning, and security advancements. Additionally, cybersecurity provides strong
job security and career growth, as skilled experts are always in demand. Another rewarding aspect is the
ability to contribute to society by developing solutions that protect individuals, businesses, and
governments from cyber threats. However, there are also challenges in this career. One major con is the
need for constant learningcyber threats evolve rapidly, requiring professionals to continually update
their skills. The role also comes with high responsibility, as security breaches can have severe consequences,
including financial losses and data exposure. Additionally, the job can be stressful and high-pressure,
