What exactly is graphic design? What exactly do you do?
Graphic design is the art and practice of creating visual content to communicate ideas and messages. At
Ladyfingers Co., we specialize in branding, packaging, publication and information design. Our work
involves crafting visual identities, designing product packaging, creating editorial layouts that simplify
complex information. Essentially, we help people tell their stories through thoughtful and strategic design.
What inspired you to pursue a career in graphic design?
I've always been drawn to visual storytelling and problem-solving. As a child, I spent a lot of time drawing
and knew early on that I wanted to pursue a creative field. When I joined Srishti School of Art, Design &
Technology, I initially thought I would become a furniture designer. During the first two years of my
foundation studies, I discovered a stronger passion for graphic design. That realization led me to explore it
as a career, and I love how it seamlessly blends creativity with strategy to create meaningful impact.
Can you share your journey in the field and how you got started as a graphic designer?
I have always had a strong interest in design and communication, which led me to study this formally.
Towards the end of college, my friends and I took on freelance projects, realizing how much we enjoyed
collaborating. Right after graduation, we decided to build something of our own and co-founded
Ladyfingers Co. with the vision of creating a fun, inspiring work environment that fosters impactful design
solutions. Over the years, weve had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, refining our
expertise and shaping our work.
What does your creative process entail when beginning a new design project?
Our creative process is structured yet flexible, ensuring that each project is tailored to the clients needs.
The key stages are:
· Discovery & Research Understanding the clients brand, market and audience.1.
· Strategy & Concept Development Defining the brands positioning and visual direction.2.
· Design & Iteration Creating initial concepts, refining based on feedback.3.
· Final Execution Delivering thought-through designs that align with the brand strategy.4.
· Implementation & Support Helping clients roll out the design effectively.5.
How do you stay inspired and consistently generate fresh ideas?
Inspiration comes from everywhereart, culture, travel, conversations and even everyday objects. I try to
look for new experiences, follow design trends, and stay engaged with different creative disciplines.
Collaboration also plays a huge role; discussing ideas with my team will often lead to interesting design
solutions.

How do you balance the needs of the client with your creative vision?
Its about finding the right balance between strategy and creativity. We
start by deeply understanding the clients goals and audience; we align
our creative vision with their brand values. We also educate clients on
the impact of good design, helping them see why certain choices work
better than others.
Which tools or software are essential for graphic designers today?
Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, after effect, light room, firefly) remains the
industry standard, but we also use Figma for digital design, Procreate for illustrations, and tools like slack
and Notion for project management.
How should one prepare for this career?
A strong foundation in design principles is essential, whether gained through formal education or self-
learning. Developing an eye for observation is equally importantpaying attention to the details in
everyday objects and experiences helps build the creative muscle needed for any design career. Good
design often goes unnoticed because it seamlessly enhances everyday life. Beyond this, building a strong
portfolio, staying informed about industry trends, and networking with other designers are valuable but
networking with people outside your industry can be invaluable. Gaining hands-on experience through
internships or freelance projects also helps develop real-world problem-solving skills.
What are the challenges a graphic designer can face? What are the pros and cons of this career?
Challenges: If you work independently, finding clients can be a constant challenge, and it's something you
have to be comfortable navigating. Overall, the pressure to stay relevant in a fast-evolving industry is
always present. With AI taking over many execution-based tasks, it's becoming increasingly important to
focus on creative thinking and problem-solving beyond just technical design skills.
Pros: You're constantly engaging with diverse content and contexts, which keeps the work dynamic and
exciting. Every project brings new challenges and learning opportunities, allowing you to expand your
knowledge in unexpected ways. Plus, creative problem-solving itself is a rewarding and enjoyable process
it makes every day feel fresh and inspiring.
Cons: The field is highly competitive, workloads can be unpredictable, and design work is often
undervalued. In India, design is still a relatively young industry, with little standardization in pay and
industry practices. Because design is inherently subjective, its perceived value varies, making pricing a
challenge. The business side of design can be messy, requiring extra effort to navigate negotiations and
client expectations.
What advice would you give to aspiring graphic designers starting in this field?
Dont chase trendsfocus on mastering the fundamentals.
Identify what excites you most about design and build a strong portfolio around ityour work will
always speak louder than a resume.
Be adaptable, open to feedback and willing to evolve.
Build your network beyond the design industryyour clients and collaborators mostly come from
different fields, not design.
Stay curiousdesign is constantly changing and continuous learning is key.
Be prepared for the reality that the early years may not be financially rewarding; this is a harsh truth
that isnt often discussed.
