Prescription to Success
I chose this because this is a field where we have greater opportunities to work fearlessly.
What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism?
What methods do you use to make sure your reporting is trustworthy and accurate?
This profession comes with certain social privileges, including an easy way to connect with celebrities.
However, it requires significant time at work, often at the expense of family time. Limited holidays make it
difficult to attend many personal events and programs.
When addressing delicate or divisive subjects, how do you maintain objectivity and impartiality?
Accuracy and integrity are paramount in this field. There should be no discrimination based on caste, creed
or religion. Reporting should be impartial and professional to avoid causing harm. Children and women
should be reported on without revealing their photos or identities. In cases of communal and caste riots,
only the incident and the damage should be reported, with no discrimination based on caste or religion.
It should be unbiased. Be clear about who you're listening to. If there are controversial issues, they should be
recorded immediately. There should be no room for personal views in the report.
In the context of reporting a story, if it is not fair or lacks a social purpose, despite being aware of it, I refrain
from pursuing it. There have been one or two incidents like this. For example, I personally declined to cover
a story related to a company.
In the age of social media and digital media, how do you modify your storytelling methods to appeal to
contemporary audiences?
Dr Raghavendra K. Thogarsi, a distinguished scholar in Kannada
Literature with a PhD from Bangalore University, has channelled his
exceptional writing skills into a successful career in journalism. Over the
years, he has garnered extensive experience across various media industries.
For the past 17 years, Dr. Thogarsi has been a vital part of Prajavani, a
prominent Kannada daily newspaper, where he currently serves as the
Senior Sub-editor. His dedication and expertise continue to make
significant contributions to the field of journalism.
Tell me some of the advantages and disadvantages of being a journalist.
What are some of the challenges that you have faced in your work?
We should constantly stay updated. As technology evolves, we need to be prepared for new challenges.
Could you discuss a situation where you faced moral dilemmas when reporting and explain how you managed
them?
Can both boys and girls take it up?
Yes, anyone can perform this task. When I say "person," it could be of any gender.
Is there a difference in how journalists from the English news media are viewed, compared to the newspapers in
the local languages?
Differentiating based on language doesn't seem evident. However, readers or viewers of each newspaper
may perceive differences in the journalist's work.
In the era of social media and digital media (new media), traditional journalism faces a challenge. However,
it always retains its value and dignity. We must be committed to that value. In contemporary times, there is
a great allure for new media. Social media is not always authenticated, and news consumers must be
cautious about it. Since digital media is very fast and simple, print and visual media have the opportunity to
adopt it and expand their readership or viewership.
What advice would you give to students who are contemplating pursuing a career in Journalism?
As the name suggests, journalism is also a business. Although it has a
social perspective, it must account for profits and losses. Advertisements
become essential for financial gain. Everyone must accept this reality.
The journalism profession should be chosen based on personal interest rather than its appeal. While there is
a bright future in this field, daily challenges are inevitable. If you learn to work properly, many
opportunities will always be available.

In your opinion, what function does journalism serve in society, and how do
you anticipate its significance changing over time?
Has the scope and methods in journalism changed over time
Yes, over time, the scope of journalism has expanded. Journalism students are now also managing PR,
Social Media for celebrities, and political leaders. There are opportunities for Content Writing for various
productions. If you are creative, there are job opportunities in advertising, movies, and TV serials as well.
Are there different types of journalism like investigative etc. or are they all the same?
Newspapers are being sold at a price lower than the production cost, because they rely on advertisements
to offset the cost. This should change, and newspapers should rely on readers instead. Readers should be
willing to buy the newspaper at any price, and newspapers should uphold the value of their customers.
This principle should be emphasized.
Investigative journalism is not a separate division in journalism. A journalist has to cover all types of news.
They develop a personal interest in certain topics, one of which can be investigative journalism. Similarly,
they can develop expertise in other areas such as law (court), commerce, crime, sports, cinema, technology,
gender issues, education, and more.
How does one become a journalist?
Anyone who can recount a straightforward incident can become a journalist. However, there is now a
preference for at least a bachelor's degree in the field. Pursuing postgraduate studies in journalism, especially
within the field itself, can offer more technical advantages. However, if someone harbours an interest in
contemporary subjects, they can certainly pursue a career in journalism.

Confused about your career?
What is the difference between Journalism and Mass Communication?
Skills and Training:
Journalism requires strong writing, interviewing, researching, and storytelling skills, as well as a deep
understanding of journalistic ethics, media law, and news production techniques.
Mass communication professionals need a varied skill set including communication theory, media
analysis, strategic communication planning, digital media production, market research, and content
creation across different media platforms.
Journalism is news reporting and storytelling, while mass communication is the study of media interaction
in society. Both fields shape public discourse and help understand the impact of media on communities.
