WHAT IS CAREER COUNSELING?
Career development is a lifelong process. Career counseling is the personalized process that helps students understand themselves and explore career options, clarify and attain desired career goals. It also assists students to discover their true potential and interest in various subjects in order to help them choose the right career and offers guidance to help them manage varied career issues. Very often, career counselors also help students to identify, challenge and change many self-limiting beliefs.
Why should we undergo Career Counseling?
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions that a person makes during his lifetime. In today’s world, the opportunities available to students are immense, ranging from the ever-popular engineering, medicine and management streams, to talent-centric fields such as fine arts or music. A correct decision regarding career choice allows for steady progress towards professional goals and this plays a crucial role in the development of individual identity and purpose, as well as positive self-esteem and interpersonal functioning.
If we are good at something and interested in some other field then what must we do?
world. To be interested in some area is one thing; to have the ability to pursue that interest is another. Being good in certain fields indicates your ability in that particular area. To be interested in a particular work/field/career does not always mean that the person has the aptitude/ability for the same. Interest without ability does not lead to success; ability without interest will make work drudgery. Proper synchrony between interest and ability is very essential to build a successful career. So check out what are the abilities required to make a success in the area of your interest and work on it and choose the stream that best fits you. If you have conflicting interests you can still find ways to pursue them. For e.g. If a person is interested in Music and Engineering he could choose to make a career in sound engineering. If not, one’s interest can always be used as a stress buster (E.g. If a person is interested in music but has an aptitude for Banking, music can always be used as a stress buster).
How can we improve ourselves for better opportunities?
We all are unique with varied interests and talents. Every one of us has ability, though the area of ability may differ. But it’s just not about being interested or talented - more important is how we present ourselves. To present ourselves well, we need to understand not only the requirements of the field/work but also understand our strengths and weaknesses. We have to utilize our strengths and work on our weaknesses to convert them to our strengths. Being self aware, self confident, assertive and positive will go a long way in making a good and realistic impression on others. Good communication skills and interpersonal skills are also essential. Being multi skilled is the best way to turn you into a good package. At your age participation is most important. Participate in all activities, grab all opportunities that help you grow and learn, talk to people and focus on your interests.
